As a practicing  lawyer for 40 years, Jim O’Connor devoted his practice to construction and construction insurance-related matters. For the last 25 years, Jim has provided ADR services to the Construction Industry, serving as an arbitrator in dozens of construction disputes and mediating myriad construction and construction insurance matters. He has represented engineers, general contractors, specialty contractors, owners, and designers in contract formation and construction disputes throughout the United States. As of January 1, 2019, he retired from the active practice of law to concentrate on delivering alternative dispute resolution services to the Construction Industry.

Experience

In addition to practicing construction law for decades, Jim has served as an arbitrator and/or mediator of construction disputes. He is an AAA trained arbitrator, serving on its National Construction Arbitrator Panel and its Construction Mega Project Arbitration Panel. He has served as an arbitrator on AAA, ICDR and ICC arbitrations. He has also served as a facilitator/mediator of construction disputes for more than two decades.

Awards and Recognitions

Jim has established himself as a leader in the national construction bar through many of its most influential organizations, including the American Bar Association Forum on Construction Law, the American College of Construction Lawyers, the Associated General Contractors of America, Chambers USA, Minnesota Super Lawyers, Martindale Hubbell and others.

Publications

Jim has published dozens of law review/journal articles on various technical and legal construction and construction insurance-related issues over the last three decades, including a book chapter on Construction Contracting; a book on Construction Systems and Technology; a 50 State Analysis of Indemnity in the Construction Industry; Additional Insured Coverages in the Construction Industry; and Insurance Coverage for Defective Construction. He was selected as a 2012 Distinguished Legal Writing Award recipient by the Burton Foundation for Legal Achievement for his article “What Every Court Should Know About Insurance Coverage for Defective Construction,” 5 J.A.C.C.L. 1 (West 2011).
